“Grandchildren are the crowning glory and ultimate delight of old age, and parents are the pride of their children.” ~ Proverbs 17:6 VOICE Translation
“Nana, can I tell you a secret?” nine-year-old Anne-Sophie asked me during a nightly WhatsApp video. “Sure,” I replied. “I have a boyfriend and you’re going to be a great grandmother,” she said. After I metaphorically picked myself up off the floor from laughing, I said, “OK.” “He invited me to his birthday party in Texas, but I can’t go because that’s far away in another country,” she said. At this point I got a bit worried that perhaps she was being duped by an online stalker, so I asked, “What is his name and how do you know him?” She told me his name and that he is in her class at school. I said, “That’s nice. It will be nice to be a great grandmother, but not until you’ve graduated from high school, college, and gotten married.” I spent the rest of the evening laughing.
Being a great grandmother had not occurred to me. I’m looking forward to our oldest granddaughter Lily’s high school graduation next month, and hope that I will see our three younger grandchildren do the same. But the announcement that I am going to be a great grandmother announced by my imaginative nine-year-old “mother-to-be” granddaughter caught me off guard.

As Art Linkletter quipped, “Kids say the darndest things.” He got that right! So did the writer of Proverbs 17:6. Grandchildren are an ultimate delight of old(ish) age. I recognize how very fortunate I am to have grandchildren. Many do not. I pray that you might share some of the delight in my sharing this story.
Delighted ~ Pastor Anne
