Helicopters

“The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.” ~ Genesis 1:12 NIV

Dear St. Paul’s Family,
Our deck was covered with a layer of helicopters last week, until I sent them flying into the yard with my power blower. They were lovely to see, and a mess when they got tracked in on our shoes. Helicopters is what we called samaras (maple tree seeds) when I was growing up in Western PA. What did you call them?
From the moment they fall from the tree they auto-rotate like helicopters as they spin their flight path, driven by the wind before landing on the ground. A single tree can release hundreds of thousands of seeds each year. God said “it was good,” when God observed the abundance of seeds that the fruits and trees of creation produced.
It is easy to get annoyed by helicopters that get carried into the house; to grumble about how fast the grass is growing, thus requiring mowing; to complain about sneezing and sniffles from the pollen that coats our cars. But these signs of abundance are miraculous demonstrations about the diversity and abundance of creation.
When I stop sneezing, I may just put a helicopter on my nose to celebrate our God of abundance.

With gratitude ~ Anne
