Tourist or Pilgrim?

June 27, 2026

I’ve traveled a lot in the past two months. Rod and I spent a week in Paris, France, with our son, his husband, Jean-Philippe, their daughters Anne-Sophie (12) and Marie-Helene (8), and their French grandmother. It was a whirlwind tour of many cultural highlights, punctuated by numerous visits to boulangeries and cafes. We walked an average of 8 miles a day and enjoyed a bit of downtime at an Airbnb. Jean-Philippe did an amazing job of planning our itinerary, pre-purchasing tickets, and arranging dinners. We were tourists, focused on sightseeing at many popular destinations, enjoying comfortable accommodations, and a short stay. It was a great experience.

But before that trip, I took a 12-day pilgrimage to the Isle of Iona, a sacred place just three miles long and one and a half miles wide. The twenty pilgrims in our group came seeking spiritual growth, immersion in the local, in this case, Celtic culture, and a particular intention or desire. My desire was to focus on discerning how best to use my gifts as a retired pastor. I prayed for that as I began the journey that included four airplanes, two trains, four cabs, one bus, and six ferries (not including the trip to and from the airport in the safe hands of Rod).

It seems I’ve forever had a longing to know more about Scotland, my Scottish ancestors, and why I resonate with Celtic Spirituality. Finally, I can write about the pilgrimage and the thin place that is Iona.

I hope my reflections will stir a longing in you for thin places.

Blessings,

Anne
