November 5, 2025 Kindness on Aisle 12

“Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” ~ Philippians 4:8 NRSV

I feel anxious as news labeled “breaking” is announced in the media. The feeling rising in my gut. It’s been that way for me since COVID 19 hit and closed down much of the world. It is hard to be bombarded with bad news. It is harder yet these days to differentiate truth from untruth.

But this morning it was easy for me to find good news. People came out in droves to vote, and I confess I am pleased with the results. Philippians 4:8 reminds me to think, to ponder, to focus on such things.

I like to “catch” such moments every day as a spiritual practice in this season of division, conflict, and falsehoods.

I had such a moment Monday, at the local Walmart, of all places.

I asked a person stocking shelves where I could find candles. She had trouble understanding me, but walked me over to one of her colleagues who not only knew where to look, but led me to the exact shelf on Aisle 12. It was a shiny moment on Aisle 12 with two employees, one whose English was challenged and another who stepped away from what she was doing to help me.

Get ready to catch a shiny moment today and think about it. ~ Anne
