Caught up in the news

April 21, 2023

“Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him.” ~Luke 24:13-16 NIV

I don’t know about you, but it is easy for me to get caught up in the news. I have apps on my phone that give me direct access to news 24-7-365, with chiming notifications of “breaking news” which are almost as hard to resist as fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies. The same is true for news on the television. I sometimes find myself waiting through several advertisements for a report of the breaking news. Often, it isn’t new news, it’s the same old same old.

How often do I miss out on good news because of the inundation of bad news?  In the story of two persons walking toward Emmaus in the evening of the day of resurrection, they had heard rumors that Jesus was resurrected, but didn’t believe it, hadn’t experienced it for themselves. Sometime on that seven-mile journey, Jesus came up and walked along with them, but they were kept from recognizing him. It is hard to see anything else when you are caught up in all the rhetoric.

I’ve turned off my news alerts, and vow that for this one day, I am not going to get caught up in the news. I wonder what I might discover? Who might be walking along with me? Where are the signs of new life? Why not join me? ~ Anne
