Don’t just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best. Work from the heart for your real Master, for God, confident that you’ll get paid in full when you come into your inheritance. ~ Colossians 3:23 The Message
Our oldest granddaughter plays field hockey, much to my surprise and delight. Lily could be on the varsity Tidily Winks team, and I’d show up for matches to cheer her on. But her commitment and enthusiasm for field hockey touches a special place in my heart, as a former player, coach and official.
She’s started for her high school team since she was a sophomore, and this, her senior year, she is also a co-captain. The team made it all the way to the Virginia High School league division 4 semifinal game, the furthest in their school’s history. Saturday, they lost the semifinal game, ending their run to the final game. Lily and the team worked hard this year, significantly improved this season, played well together, and played their hearts out against a bigger, faster, and more experienced team.
They had a great run, and while it would have been great to qualify for the final game, they have much to feel good about.
I texted a friend about the results with these words, “We lost 0:2. They held their own and I am proud.” She texted back, “The win is in your final statement. Not on the scoreboard.” She is wise, and spot-on.
We tend to measure results in quantitative ways, scores, rankings, wealth, etc. Thankfully, that is not how God works. God cares about our hearts, our love for others, cooperation, sharing, among other things. The apostle Paul put it this way, “Don’t just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best. Work from your heart for your real master, for God.” That is the win!
Do your best. Work from your heart. ~ Anne
