Buried Treasures

September 30, 2022

“I’ll lead you to buried treasures, secret caches of valuables – confirmations that it is,

in fact, I, God, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.” Isaiah 45:3 The Message

Tomorrow is Rod’s birthday. We will find a way to celebrate in Spain but went out to dinner Thursday evening so that I could give him cards and a couple of gifts before we leave. Rod had two items on his gift list, a new thin-line NIV Bible since the one I gave him forty years ago was falling apart and covers for the arm rests on his chair.

The Bible was a no-brainer, thanks to Amazon. The arm covers were a different matter. I order a set from Amazon, the ones closest to the dimensions of the arm rests. They were horrid and way to big. In desperation, I called Dayton Interiors near Harrisonburg, the store I thought we purchased the chair from in 2020. The person I talked couldn’t find our order, so he asked me to look under the chair for the manufacturer. I turned the chair upside done but could not find a label. He suggested that I remove the seat cushion and look there.

To my complete surprise, not only did I find the label, but I also found two lovely arm rest covers, made to go with the chair. I was ecstatic and thanked the man profusely for taking care of my issue and making the perfect gift. He said, “I can tell you two things about the chair. First you didn’t buy it from us as we don’t carry that brand. Second, whoever delivered it and set it up made a huge mistake by not putting the covers on the arm rests.

For two years, Rod has been sitting atop the covers. It was all I could do to not reveal the information until this evening. Without the guidance of the person who took my call, we might not have found them for years. Funny, how God and grace work.

I suspect this is the way of the One who calls us by name, placing unexpected treasures in the least expected places. ~ Anne
