Jesus’ parents were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother, “This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, and many others to rise. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.”
~ Luke 2:33-35 NLT
Did you ever notice that something you have heard or read many times hits you with in a new or different way?
I’m a mother. I have two sons. I’ve always encountered this text from that place, connecting on a visceral level with Mary, suffering as she witnessed Jesus suffering, a sword piercing her own heart. Amidst worries and concerns for my own sons spanning 47 years. I don’t think those worries will end in this lifetime
But this morning, the phrase that hit was ….falling and rising of many. The words of Jesus can cut deep. Today I’m thinking of the words, “no one can serve both money and God.”
My “problems” are what Rod and I refer to as First World Problems.” I’m worrying about hiking shoes, blisters and water bottles. Most of the world would be glad for an extra pair of shoes and access to clean water.
It’s not money, but the love of money, that can worm its way into my life and distract me from the One who is Love, and Love’s desire for all Love’s children.
When I walk the Camino I want to remember those who can’t walk, those who are in their feet all day just to earn enough money to keep body and soul together. I want to remember the grace of safe water. I want to walk with gratitude, and humility.
God, reveal the deepest thoughts of my heart and keep me from falling over this one. ~ Anne
