“The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field, but while everybody was asleep an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and then went away. So, when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well.”
Matthew 13:24-26 NRSV
Where do all the weeds come from? Saturday morning, I put in a couple of hours doing what I call playing in the yard. My goal, aside from getting my hands dirty was to weed. I did the same task a week earlier but apparently an enemy is sowing weeds as fast as I can pull them.
Two hour later I finished weeding the last flower bed. Bucket of pulled weeds and trowel in hand, I headed towards the house. There, right in front of me was a weed that I swear was not there ten minutes earlier. The enemy is winning. I pulled that sucker out with a bit more vehemence than necessary and then headed inside for a cold drink.
Ice water in hand, I remembered a comment someone made that got under my skin. Unbidden, it came to mind and just like that, before I even knew what was happening, it grew. I am not out to declare a war on all weeds, just the ones that compete for nutrients, water, and sun. That goes for my flower beds and my spiritual life.
Thanks for the reminder to keep my spiritual garden well-weeded. ~ Anne
