Superhero Mermaid

“There is neither Jew nor Greek; there is neither slave nor free; nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28 CEB

The Superheroes and Mermaids story took a redeeming turn during a video conversation with Marie-Hélène Tuesday evening. When I answered the WhatsApp video call, she appeared laying on her Papa’s back. She had a crocodile tear on her right cheek bone, a bit of lingering sadness from a spat with her older sister.

Papa asked, “How was Superheroes and Mermaids today?”  “Fun,” she replied. I asked, “What kind of Superhero are you?” She replied, “A Superhero Mermaid.” “And what is your superpower?” I asked. “I can change colors,” she replied with a grin, and proceeded to put her finger over the lens of the camera on the phone so that the image on my screen gradually turned from her face to pink to red and back again. When her face reappeared, she noticed the tear on her cheek and wiped it off with a huge grin.

With the innocence and wisdom of a five-year-old, she had figured out that she could be a mermaid superhero with an awesome superpower. What I perceived as two separate dualistic realities, she had found a unitive wholeness. There is neither superhero nor mermaid, for we are all one in Christ Jesus.
