The Story of the Lost Phone

July 18, 2022

“Imagine a woman who has a cell phone loses it. Won’t she light a lamp and scour the house, looking in every nook and cranny until she finds it? And when she finds it you can be sure she’ll call her friends and neighbors: ‘Celebrate with me! I found my lost phone!’ Count on it—that’s the kind of party God’s angels throw every time one lost soul turns to God.” Luke 15:8-10 The Message, adapted by AFC

The person graciously consented. I hurried off to the retrace my steps. It wasn’t in the port-a-pot I’d visited before the session. I rushed back to the Spiritual Direction tent. It wasn’t on the table. One of the other spiritual directors said, “Give me your number and I’ll call you.” As soon as she did, I could hear it ringing on my person. I put my hand to my chest, and there it was, right in my bra where I’d put it when I used the toilet so it didn’t drop into you know what.

I rushed back to my chair under the tree, and said, “I found it! Thank you for your patience. Now I can listen without being distracted.”

Later, as the session was drawing to a close, it occurred to me that a big part of the spiritual life is attending to and listening to the spiritual heart, right where my cell phone had been all the time I was searching in other places.

That is party-worthy. ~ Anne
