“Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples —when they see the love you have for each other.” John 13:35
Last Saturday we drove to Bowie, MD to celebrate Marie-Helene’s 5th birthday. We received specific instructions to bring Kiko, our border collie along for the festivities. We arrived, Kiko and presents in hand. We rang the doorbell, and when the birthday girl opened it, she exclaimed, “Kiko.” He rolled on his back for a tummy rub. As an afterthought, we received hugs with far less enthusiasm.
Later, Marie-Helene and I were in the breakfast nook, along with Kiko. She looked me straight in the eyes and stated, “Nana, I love Kiko more than I love you.” I admit that there was a little voice in my head suggesting this was a “What am I, chopped liver?” moment. But the bigger voice was absolutely delighted with her honesty and with her ability to love, so grandly, a dog I also love. Jesus told his disciples, “Love one another. In the same way that I loved you, you love one another.” I am still laughing at her candor and love.
Help me, Jesus, to express such love for all your loved ones. ~ Anne
