“Whoever is wise will pay attention to these things, carefully considering the Lord’s faithful love.” ~ Psalm 107:43

I usually feed the pups after Rod and I have eaten, but a couple of days ago I decided to feed the dogs their dinner before Rod and I ate. My reason: the temperatures were rapidly dropping, and I wanted to get them fed and toileted before it got any colder. I was bundled up and walked quickly in hopes that the dogs would do their #2 business quickly.
Just then, I looked around me, and the bright red of what looked like a massive fire caught my eye. I discovered that what I saw was an apocalyptic-looking sunset. I walked to a place where the view was uninterrupted, and risked frost bite to take a few photos.
I momentarily forgot about the cold, and the issues with doggies #2, and simply said, “Wow!” A few minutes later the dogs were relieved and we walked quickly home. I stopped at our front door to look one last time at the sunset, and it had passed.
I’m not necessarily the wisest person on the block, but I am drawn to noticing the unusual and practiced in paying attention to such things. At that moment, and in reflecting on that moment, I realized what a gift it was to have been there at just the right time and just the right place, when normally I’d have been preoccupied with my own dinner. The “It just so happens” God is faithful love. Sometimes we just don’t notice.
May the practice of paying attention increase our wisdom in the coming year. ~ Anne
