Live your life with love, following the example of Christ, who loved us and gave himself for us. He was a sacrificial offering that smelled sweet to God. Ephesians 5:2 CEB
I felt like I’d won the lottery! I mentioned to the woman assigned to welcome us to Williamsburg Landing that I would be missing gardening since we are moving into an apartment. That evening, I received an email from another resident who volunteers with landscaping and managing residents’ garden plots, including a butterfly garden, a fenced-in garden, and raised bed gardens. It just so happened that there was one open raised bed spot, and she offered it to me.
I made the rounds of local home and garden centers. Although it is late in the season, I found a lovely patio tomato plant with buds promising a harvest next month. I added basil and rosemary for cooking and finished it off with annuals for color. Every morning, I walk to the garden, dead-head old blooms and cut off suckers on the tomato plant, add water, and snip off some basil or rosemary for dinner.
I carry the scents of basil, rosemary, tomato suckers, soil, and sweat on my hands and forearms, a reminder of my work, evocative of gardens past and meals to come. It is a sweet smell to me. I imagine it is also to the One who is Love. What are the scents in your life that remind you of the One who is Love? ~ Anne
