What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your God knowing it. ~ Matthew 10:29 NLT (adapted)

When I heard Marie-Hélène yell yesterday on our walk, “Papa, there’s a worm on the sidewalk!”I assumed it was because of her fear of bugs. What happened next shocked me. “Papa, we need to save it!” I was on a walk with the two younger granddaughters, the pups, and their Papa, Jean-Philippe. He stopped and said, “Oh no!” Next thing I knew, he was searching for a small stick, and Marie-Helene was looking for a leaf. Equipped with these simple tools, they ever-so-gently managed to get the worm onto the stick, off the sidewalk, and into the grass, covered from the heat of the sun by the leaf.
The same thing happened four times during the walk. Each time, Jean-Philippe said, “When we save a worm, we are saving the earth.” Four earthworms were saved from becoming scorched by the sun and carefully placed on the grass. Marie-Helene checked on those worms on the walk back to the house to make sure they were safe. Later in the car on the way to see Lilo and Stitch, Marie-Helene said, “Nana, I didn’t care about the earth, I cared about the worms.” Another wise person, St. Teresa of Calcutta, said, “If you can’t do great things, do small things with great love.”
In this season of dire and scary things happening in our world and in our nation, I often despair that I can’t make a difference. With the wisdom of an eight-year-old, and the lovingly gentle hand of her Papa, I was filled with hope for the world and for my efforts to care well and lovingly for what seemed like small things. ~ Anne
