In the Messiah, in Christ, God leads us from place to place in one perpetual victory parade. Through us, he brings knowledge of Christ. Everywhere we go, people breathe in the exquisite fragrance. Because of Christ, we give off a sweet scent rising to God, which is recognized by those on the way of salvation—an aroma redolent with life. ~ 2 Corinthians 2:14-15a The Message

Jackson on Anne-Sophie’s Bed
I was sitting on Anne-Sophie’s bed having a few moments of “girl talk” while everyone else was on a walk. I had Izzy and Jackson with me, and Jackson made himself right at home with us on her bed. Our conversation floated from school to puberty (high on the agenda of ten-year-old girls) to Izzy and Jackson.
Anne-Sophie was patting Jackson, and said, “Jackson’s breath smells like you, Nana.” I asked, “is that a good or not so good thing?” She replied, I LOVED Kiko (who died 16 months ago), but he had really bad breath. Izzy and Jackson have good breath that reminds me of your house and you.” It was one of the oddest compliments I’ve ever received. I give you permission to offer me breath mints if you discern a less fragrant smell!
It got me to thinking about the smells of my grandmother and her house. I remember rose water, hoarhound cough drops, Paquin’s Hand Cream, applesauce, coffee and Ovaltine. She was a constant source of affirmation and love in my life and when I catch a whiff of her fragrances I experience her unconditional love. That is not surprising since, “the connection between our sense of smell and emotions is unlike that of the other senses because olfactory system nerves connect directly to brain structures of the limbic system. Odors can trigger both positive and negative emotions as aromas are associated with specific memories.” See Smell and Emotions).
The Apostle Paul says, “Everywhere we go, people breath in “the exquisite fragrance. Because of Christ, we give off a sweet scent rising to God, which is recognized by those on the way of salvation—an aroma redolent with life.”
I’m glad that Anne-Sophie likes how my house smells, and that Izzy and Jackson share a scent with me. I pray that I give off “a sweet scent rising to God, an aroma redolent with life.” I hope I catch a whiff of life in you as well. ~ Anne
