Spotting!

“God won’t let your foot slip. Your protector won’t fall asleep on the job.” ~ Psalm 121:3 CEB

When I was a Penn State P.E. major, one of the required courses for all P.E .students was gymnastics. We needed to learn the basics of floor exercise, uneven parallel bars, the balance beam and the vault. As we practiced the various skills we also learned to spot our partners, to prevent injuries if they slipped or started to fall. This was even more important than learning to perfect any skill.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a spotter for many of life’s challenges? Someone along-side us who watches us carefully, allows us to try new and daring skills, and is ready to catch us when we slip?

Psalm 121 reminds us that God won’t let your foot slip and isn’t asleep. I don’t think that means that we never slip or fall. But it does mean that we are not alone. We have a spotter who understands what it is to be human, to be afraid, to be hurt, and to feel alone through the embodied life of Jesus.

For the presence of One who will never leave us or forsake us or fall asleep on the job I am eternally grateful. ~ Anne
