“God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.”
~ Ecclesiastes 3:11 NLT
Have you ever seen a bumper sticker like the one above? It’s a scary thought, but apparently Jackson thinks it is his duty to be my co-pilot, in addition to being my shadow, companion, and face licker – yuck to the face licks!

He loves to stand with his forelegs on the consol between the driver’s and passenger’s seats. I think he thinks he is my co-pilot. I haven’t had the heart to tell him the truth. Truth be told, while prayer is a part of my daily life, I use some additional helps while driving –Waze and handy Subaru tools like cruise control, auto-brake, and lane change warnings.
Waze and other GPS apps serve one of the functions of a co-pilot in an airplane. The co-pilot enters flight information including the destination to keep on the correct flight path. That’s helpful unless the pilot decides to take a different route. They may warn the pilot of the error but can’t do the correcting for the pilot. As I reflect on this day after Pentecost, I have a sense that God, through the presence of the Spirit is my co-pilot.
The writer of Ecclesiastes tells us “God has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.” What does that mean to you?
We have a sense of, and a longing for, love and belonging. It is my belief that eternity is being with the One who is Love and in whom we find belonging. But unlike a copilot who enters the destination, God lets us “fly the plane,” choose our own destinations, make our way in life. God puts us in relationships with others who can help us recalculate when we are off course, and through the witness of Jesus’ actions, and nudges from the Spirit, helps us find our way to God.
Jackson does this cute thing when I get into the car. He licks my ear, encouraging me, letting me know that he is there and that I am not alone. I doubt that copilots do that, so perhaps Jackson is providing a reminder of God’s presence with me, always, and encouraging me enroute.
I’m grateful for that not-tangible but nonetheless real witness to God in my life. ~ Anne
