Mrs. Lambeck

This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you.” John 15:11 NRSV

I’ve been thinking about the people who have modeled Jesus’ command to love one another. Mrs. Lambeck, my 4th grade Sunday School Teacher came to mind. She had high expectations of us. For example, not only did we need to memorize a weekly Bible verse, but we also had to find them in our Bibles. I discovered that there was more to the Bible than pictures which were common back then. I can still see her classroom and some of my classmates, dressed in our Sunday best, learning about the Bible.

Her love of God and love of us was palpable. She was the first adult I remember who invited us to come to her house to talk if we ever had a problem. Several months later, I had a problem, and didn’t think I could talk to my parents about it. I’d discovered two 6th grade neighborhood boys smoking cigarettes.

After much thought I got on my bike and rode the mile to Mrs. Lambeck’s house. I knocked on her door; she answered and invited me in. I told her the problem and she listened deeply. She asked a few questions, and also suggestions about what I could do. Then she served up homemade cookies and lemonade before sending me on my way.

I have no memory of the wisdom she shared, or what happened with the boys. I do remember sitting in her living room, feeling valued and loved; and treated like a “real” person, not just some kid. And of course, I remember the cookies and lemonade.

All these years later, I realize she was living out the commandment to love one another…even a 4th grade girl who showed up at her door.
