“Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger.” Psalm 8:2 NRSV
I had the first of two cataracts removed on Monday, as the time (or at least the cataract) was ripe. It’s one of those times that when something gets bad enough, and not before, insurance pays for the procedure. As I wait another 8 days for the second surgery, I am in the odd place of seeing in full, living color out of my right eye and have 20/20 vision for distance, something that I haven’t had without corrective lenses since I was in third grade. I am also in the awkward phase, when my old glasses are far too strong for my right eye, but without them my left eye, and my near vision in my right eye are wonky. Thanks be to God for a friend with readers that make reading and using the computer possible.
Thanks to our youngest granddaughter, Marie-Hélène I was blessed with a temporary new name. If you haven’t had cataract surgery, you may not know about the eye shield that you wear for the first 24 hours and then every night for a week on the affected eye to prevent accidentally rubbing or bumping that eye.

Sporting my eye shield after getting home from the hospital.
Monday evening, as usual, I had a WhatsApp video call from the two youngest granddaughters. Marie-Hélène took one look at me and said, “Nana, why do you have that on your eye.” I gave a child-appropriate explanation of cataract surgery and the purpose of the shield. In her child-like honesty, she exclaimed, “It looks like a fly’s eye. You are Nana Findlay Fly Eye.” The Psalmist says, “out of the mouths of babes.” Art Linkletter said, “Kids say the darndest things.” They were right. The belly laugh that ensued was the perfect conclusion of the day. It continues to bring me smiles each time I tape it on for the night.
With gratitude for kids who say the darndest things and God who works through others to heal us. ~ Anne
