If I’d known about the bats I might have skipped the tour. We heard about the history of the university, the traditional school garb on which J. R. Rowling based the uniforms at Hogwart’s School.
We entered the 16th century library through the jail in the cellar. I stopped in one of the jail cells for student misbehavior, such as being out after curfew. Then we climbed three floors to the library.
It was remarkably ornate, divided into three rooms with bookshelves that rose some 30 feet. The guide described the various means to preserve the books: low light, steady temperatures, no flash photography. The books in the collection were treated in a room that removed all the oxygen to destroy any insects they might contain. And the final means of preservation: bats that were hiding behind the stack by day, and keeping insects at bay. I have an aversion to bats. Yikes! My aversion is environmentally friendly.
Psalm 119:11 recommends another option, hiding God’s word in my heart. No bats involved! Anne
