A Lifetime of Presence

I will be your God throughout your lifetime— until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you. ~ Isaiah 46:6 NLT

“Because of your age, you can get the (___fill-in-the-blank___) vaccine.” I was old enough to be in the first round of COVID 19 vaccinations. I lined up for my Pneumonia vaccination not long after. I recently received the RSV vaccination. They are given to me because I am a senior citizen (65 and older). I notice that I am referred to as “dear” or “honey” rather than by name. And that feels less like an honor and more a diminishment.

It was hard to watch my grandmother, father, mother, and sisters as their health and abilities declined, and now to witness the steep decline of my in-laws.  It is tempting to deny, or detach, or avoid prolonged contact so as not to face the reality of mortality, theirs,’ and mine.

I spent the early part of my life trying to be good enough, until grace caught me by surprise. It didn’t matter if I was good, or enough. I discovered I was loved by God simply because that’s who God is. I suspect the challenge of this next stage is yielding to diminishment because love holds all, carries all, is all.

Love cares for us. Love will carry us along and save us, a lifetime of God’s presence. ~ Anne
