Sharing the Load

“Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.” ~ Galatians 6:2 NRSV

A friend and I spent Friday morning kayaking on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River. It was a good way to beat the oppressive heat before the day got too hot. It was a beautiful morning, and we saw many herons, cardinals, and turtles. The river was running low, which created some challenges. I noticed that although I am smaller than my friend, I seemed to be getting stuck more often. It didn’t make any sense. She noted that I was sitting up straight in my kayak, and I observed her reclining through the low spots.

The next time I approached a low spot, I stretched out, bearing much of my weight with my shoulders and legs. This took the weight off of my behind. Amazingly, spreading the weight load made for a lighter kayak and easier paddling. Later we took a break in a shady spot along the river break and began talking about congregations. She is new to church life, and noted that in her home congregation, most of the work is done by a few persons. I told her that unfortunately most congregations operate that way.

Back on the river, I had time to think more about the conversation. It hit me that spreading the load of my body weight in the kayak made for a much easier ride. The same is true in congregations as well. Bearing one another’s burdens – sharing the load makes all our loads a bit lighter.

Who knew what one small change could make such a big difference.

With blessings ~ Anne
